WASHINGTON – House Democrats are preparing a 100-days agenda centered on affordability and oversight of the Trump administration if they capture the majority in next month’s elections. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, in line to become speaker, said the party would be united starting out on health subsidies, Medicaid, the Iran war and tariffs. Leaders expect to begin the push in the first 100 hours after the new Congress is seated in January.
The early votes would include restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits that expired in 2025, a lapse Democrats link to higher insurance costs for millions of Americans. Other measures would roll back Republican Medicaid reductions enacted in the One Big Beautiful Bill of tax breaks and program cuts, including new work requirements for recipients. The plan also calls for reversing President Donald Trump’s tariffs while Congress seeks to reclaim authority from the White House, plus additional war powers resolutions pressing to end military action involving Iran.
Jeffries months ago created five working groups on health care, housing, groceries and goods, gas and utilities, and care-giving. Each pairs a progressive with a centrist, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama on health care, to draft policies backed across the caucus. Separately, senior Democrats on the Oversight and Judiciary committees were directed to prepare investigations of Trump, his family and his administration as part of an anti-corruption drive, with Jeffries saying impeachment is neither on nor off the table.
Democrats have been out of House power since 2023. If Jeffries takes the helm, he would be the first Democratic speaker since Nancy Pelosi. Republicans describe the opposition as tied to a far-left socialist agenda, while Speaker Mike Johnson said on CNBC’s Squawk Box that Republicans would continue their work on taxes and federal spending alongside Trump. Progressive Caucus Chairman Greg Casar of Texas rejected comparisons to the Freedom Caucus, saying progressives seek to pass legislation rather than block it.
