Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Agreed to Energy Ceasefire

President Donald Trump said Sunday on social media that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire effective immediately. He wrote that both parties had agreed and said, “Do not break it!” as quoted in his post.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv did not know about the plan in advance. A Ukrainian official told CNN, “We just read it as you did,” while Zelensky wrote on X that Ukraine supports the ceasefire and is awaiting details from the American side and that steps toward de-escalation are needed.

Zelensky said Russia was still hitting energy infrastructure in Kyiv and in the city of Kharkiv after Trump’s statement, including a power plant in Kyiv and energy facilities in the Kharkiv region. He said Monday there were Russian violations of the energy ceasefire announced by Trump and that Kyiv would abide by the agreement if Russia does too, noting a source close to him said Ukraine was not attacking Russian oil refineries while waiting for clarity and that a Russian jet-powered Shahed struck a gas production facility overnight.

When asked about the comments on Monday, the Kremlin said contacts are ongoing without providing further details. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “I have nothing to add on this subject.”

The announcement came days after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about a deal to supply markets with Russian diesel fuel. Seven senators, including four Republicans, released a statement asking the administration to reverse course, saying Congress banned Russian energy imports in 2022 to prevent American dollars from financing the war.
