President Trump announced Tuesday that Taiwan has agreed to purchase 30 percent of gas from the Alaska pipeline over the next 20 years, speaking at a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska. Trump said Taiwan will invest $4.4 billion in the project in addition to $50 billion already committed by South Korea.
Trump credited incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, with helping secure the agreement, saying at the event, “I have to say that Dan Sullivan helped me get this done. Thank you, Dan.” Earlier this month Trump said South Korea would invest up to $200 billion in U.S. energy infrastructure, including toward the Alaska natural gas pipeline, a natural gas plant in Texas and eight new nuclear power plants across the U.S.
Sullivan faces a competitive reelection contest against former Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, with another Republican also named Dan Sullivan in the race. Sabato’s Crystal Ball moved the race from “toss-up” to “leans Democratic” earlier this week, while Decision Desk HQ also has Peltola slightly favored and the Cook Political Report rates it as “toss-up.”
